Browntop millet, scientifically known as Brachiaria ramosa, is a lesser-known but highly nutritious ancient millet. In India, it is commonly referred to as हरी कंगनी (Hari Kangni) and is grown in parts of Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, and some northern regions.
The grains are small, light brown to greenish, and have a mild, slightly earthy taste. Browntop millet is considered one of the fastest-growing millets and is valued for both its nutritional benefits and environmental sustainability.
It is now gaining popularity as a superfood millet, especially among people seeking healthy, gluten-free alternatives to rice and wheat.
